Travelling for Cosmetic Surgery — What You Need to Know
It can work well when properly planned. Where it goes wrong is usually in the first two weeks after surgery.
Out-of-town patients from within South Africa and internationally are welcome. What makes travel work is honest planning of the whole recovery, not just the surgery.
Rule of thumb: plan to stay in the same city as the surgeon for at least one week after facial or breast surgery, and closer to two weeks after abdominoplasty or larger body-contouring work. Do not fly on the day the dressing comes off. Confirm with your travel insurance whether cover applies after elective surgery.
Where possible, first consultation is in person, followed by scheduled follow-up visits after surgery. Video follow-ups can supplement — never replace — in-person post-operative checks in the first six weeks.
