What Not to Say to Your Plastic Surgeon

Dr Danie Hoffmann3 min read

Nothing you say in an ethical consultation is off-limits — but a few statements make it harder for the surgeon to help you.

The consultation is a private medical conversation. You can be direct, emotional, uncertain, or contradict yourself — a good surgeon expects that. What makes the consultation harder is not honesty, but three specific things.

First, hiding medications, supplements, recreational drug or nicotine use. All of these affect anaesthesia, bleeding and wound healing. Second, showing photographs of a celebrity and asking to look like them — anatomy does not transfer between people, and a good surgeon will steer you back to what your own face or body can plausibly become. Third, minimising a previous mental health history that is directly relevant to the outcome.

The other thing to avoid is a rehearsed script. Say what is bothering you, in your own words, and let the surgeon examine and plan from there.

Educational content only. Results vary between individuals and all surgery carries risk. Every plan begins with an unhurried consultation and an examination — never a quote over the phone.
