Plastic Surgeon vs Cosmetic Surgeon — What's the Difference?
In South Africa, 'Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon' is a protected specialist qualification. 'Cosmetic doctor' is not.
A Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in South Africa has completed medical school, at least two years of internship and community service, and then a further five to six years of accredited surgical training culminating in a national specialist exam and HPCSA registration in the specialty. Aesthetic surgery is one part of that broader specialty, which also covers reconstruction, hand surgery, congenital anomalies and burns.
'Cosmetic surgeon', 'cosmetic doctor' and similar titles are not protected specialist registrations in South Africa. A doctor using them may have taken short courses in specific techniques but has not completed the full specialist training in surgery.
