How to Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon for Your Goals

Match the surgeon to the procedure, not the marketing. Registration, training and honest conversation matter more than any before/after gallery.

The right plastic surgeon for you is the one whose training, day-to-day operating list and consulting style match the operation you are considering. In South Africa the first check is straightforward: the surgeon must be registered with the HPCSA as a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and typically a member of APRASSA. Anything less specific — 'cosmetic doctor', 'aesthetic physician' — is a different qualification.

The second check is fit. A surgeon who does mostly hand and burn work is not the best person for a primary rhinoplasty, and the reverse is equally true. Ask how often the surgeon performs the exact procedure you want, at which hospital, and who does the anaesthetic.

The third check happens in the room. A good consultation is unhurried, examines you carefully, explains what surgery can and cannot change, and is comfortable saying no when a procedure is not in your interest. If you leave the room feeling sold to, that is information. If you leave feeling heard, examined and given a written plan, that is also information.

Dr Hoffmann sees every prospective patient personally, examines them, and provides a written surgical plan. No quotes are given over the phone.

Educational content only. Results vary between individuals and all surgery carries risk. Every plan begins with an unhurried consultation and an examination — never a quote over the phone.
