How to Prepare Mentally and Physically for Surgery

Dr Danie Hoffmann4 min read

The four things that most affect your result: sleep, nutrition, no nicotine, and a properly organised week one.

Physical preparation starts weeks in advance. Stop all nicotine, including vapes and nicotine replacement, for at least four weeks before and four weeks after surgery — nicotine measurably impairs wound healing. Stop non-essential supplements and any medications the rooms flag on the pre-operative checklist. Eat protein-rich meals and hydrate normally in the last week.

Practical preparation is about the first week at home. Have loose front-buttoning clothing, a firm pillow for the bed, easy-to-reach food, phone chargers within arm's reach and a lift home organised. Fill any prescribed medication before the surgery date. Arrange help with young children or pets for at least the first 3–4 days.

Mental preparation is often overlooked. Expect a low mood day around days 3–5 as bruising peaks and the excitement wears off — it passes. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel fine. Do not compare your day-3 photos to anyone's healed result.
