The Role of Anaesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery Safety
A specialist anaesthetist is not optional. It is the single most important safety factor after surgeon selection.
Every operation in this practice is performed with a specialist anaesthetist — a doctor who has completed a full anaesthesia specialist training and is HPCSA-registered in the specialty. The anaesthetist is present throughout the operation, manages your airway, monitors every vital sign, and controls your pain during and immediately after surgery.
The choice of anaesthesia (general, sedation, regional or local) is made by the anaesthetist and the surgeon together, based on the operation, its length and your medical history. You will have a pre-operative discussion with the anaesthetist before surgery — this is the appropriate time to ask about your specific concerns.
Ask any surgeon quoting you for an aesthetic operation who the anaesthetist will be, and confirm they are a specialist anaesthetist. This is a non-negotiable safety standard.
