Does Medical Aid Cover Cosmetic Surgery in South Africa?
Purely cosmetic procedures are not covered. Reconstructive components sometimes are.
South African medical schemes do not cover purely cosmetic surgery — for example, a rhinoplasty performed only to change appearance, or a breast augmentation to increase size. These are paid privately.
Where surgery has a functional or reconstructive element, some cover may apply. Examples include scar revision for functionally limiting scars, and correction of nasal breathing problems performed alongside cosmetic rhinoplasty (a septorhinoplasty). The reconstructive portion is submitted to the scheme; the cosmetic portion is quoted separately.
